We were approached by Bricks Developments Ltd in 2014 to design two Hampton by Hilton hotels in Aberdeen using a modular construction system by CIMC, one of the world’s largest suppliers of shipping containers, based in China. The modular construction method has been developed hand-in-hand with Hilton to perfectly suit the Hampton by Hilton brand standards and use shipping container technology to construct fully completed guestrooms modules off-site, ready for shipping and installation. This unconventional system resulted in the fasted build time for any Hilton project in the UK, with 155 bedrooms being constructed in just 43 weeks on site. Both hotels were undertaken at the same time, with a few months between the completion dates.
The sites are located just six miles apart: one in D2 Business Park at Aberdeen International Airport and one on Straik Road, Westhill. The D2 site lies to the south of Aberdeen International Airport, neighbouring many new energy sector headquarters. The hotel sits on a prominent corner on Dyce Drive, enjoying views over the airport. The Straik Road site lies to the west of Aberdeen in the commuter town of Westhill, forming part of a small mixed use development with adjacent office accommodation.
The interior design of the public areas reflects the local industries of agriculture and energy, with rich terracotta and blue tones completing simple geometric forms. A variety of seating is provided to allow for informal gatherings, business meetings, hot-desk working and breakfasting.
The modular construction method has been developed hand-in-hand with Hilton to perfectly suit the Hampton by Hilton brand standards and use shipping container technology to construct fully completed guestrooms modules off-site, ready for shipping and installation.
In terms of the local market, this fresh, contemporary hotel represents a new dimension to the Hilton family.
