Gorgie Road

Major student accommodation scheme, made up of 248 bedrooms. 35 of these will be studio rooms with a cluster of apartments, ranging from six to 10 bedrooms, making up the rest. In addition to the accommodation there will also be study rooms, a games area, a gym, cinema, laundry area and secure cycle storage for each resident.

Located on Gorgie Road, a major arterial route into Edinburgh from the west, this site was formerly occupied by a collection of warehouses and workshops. The site is a complex U-shaped parcel of land, with several spatial constraints, which stretches from the urban edge of Gorgie Road to the suburban setting of Chesser Grove, with archetypal semi-detached dwellings. The challenge presented by the site was to tie these characteristics together in one development. The strategy was to divide the development into two blocks, which each addressed the respective characters of the streetscape, set within a soft green landscape which stretches into the heart of the site from the adjacent Water of Leith corridor.
